Reflexivity

Autobiography of an art work

Reflexivity is an internal dialogue, a condition of existence in society, which activates the causal power of structure and enables individuals to project actions based on the articulation between their own interests and the contexts allowing their birth.

Reflexivity is related to the circular correlations between cause and effect. A reflexive relationship is bidirectional, as a cause, and also as an effect, influencing one another throughout their interaction, during which neither of them can be described as such.

A reflexive relationship is a binary one in a series in which each element relates to itself.

There are many ways reflexivity can be exemplified, that have been described as implying complex relationships between how we know, what we know and who we are.

Reflexivity in art consists essentially of the one creating while asking himself some main questions about the modality he uses: What is painting? What has to be painted? What is reality?

Actually, this was also the starting point of Rene Magritte’s famous “Ceci n’est pas une pipe” and the launch of the dare to solve a personal exercise of vision towards the viewer: Do you believe what you see? Or do you believe me?
